One of my favorite projects at Oregon State University was designing a food forest to supply fresh produce for the OSU food pantry, which provides food to low-income students and their families. My landscape projects budget was increased to $1,500 since the previous year, so I was able to fund this project without applying for a grant. I enjoyed that this project was very collaborative, and I got to work closely with many people and organizations. While I took part in much of the planning and construction, my primary role was the design of a 50 foot long espalier trellis to support fruit trees. After developing a final design, I purchased the materials and coordinated the construction of this garden feature. The trellis is built with a rot resistant species of Cypress Tree, Juniper, which is invasive to Eastern Oregon. To further prolong longevity the posts were elevated above the ground using brackets embedded in concrete forms.
